90 Robert Parker
The 2017 Grillo Family and Friends opens to robust aromas of summer peach, zesty orange peel, pineapple and exotic fruit. Some 11,000 bottles were made. This wine is refined in a combination of oak and egg-shaped concrete vats for seven months. This is a mid-weight white that delivers silky sensations of honey and peach syrup to the palate. The finish is spicy and tart with a distant hint of cinnamon. Drink: 2018-2022 (Monica Larner, 28th Dec 2018)
Producer
Feudo Maccari
A patchwork of over 50 separate plots, the Feudo Maccari estate was pieced together in 2000, by father and daughter duo, Antonio and Monika Moretti. Along the south-facing hills of Noto – the 100-hectare property benefits from these diverse Sicilian terroirs - making wines that are of incomparable complexity. Ideally located, the winery sits just a few kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea on the southern tip of the island. Along with the similarly owned Tuscans estates, Tenuta Sette Ponti and Poggio al Lupo, Feudo Maccari has risen to the top of Italy’s finest-quality wines. Today, beside his daughter, Monika, the two craft exceptional Nero d’Avola based wines, that are well-structured, elegant, age-worthy examples of the region.
