This is fresh, with an expressive beam of cassis, cherry pie and blackberry fruit flavors layered with red and black licorice and backed by honest grip on the finish. Offers good purity and mouthfeel. Drink now through 2015. –JM

The 2010 is one of his best efforts so far, but they have all been good since he first introduced this fun-drinking, hedonistic, delicious wine a number of years ago. Dark plum/ruby, with loads of mocha and black cherry fruit, this sleeper of the vintage is a Bordeaux fruit bomb and a great value. Drink it over the next several years. This 50,000-bottle cuvee of 100% Merlot, coming largely from Fronsac, is fashioned by Jean-Luc Thunevin. I saw Thunevin on my last trip to Bordeaux, and he claims the “Bad Boy” reference is to me, not him, but I don’t know.

Ets Thunevin
While the talented Jean-Luc Thunevin is best known for his Saint-Émilion Premier Cru Classé estate - Château Valandraud - he also produces some of the most impressive Bordeaux value wines around. His Bad Boy line of affordable wines, otherwise known as Mauvais Garçon in French, was actually inspired by one of the world’s most influential wine critics, Robert Parker. Parker has repeatedly called Thunevin “Saint-Émilion’s bad boy” or “Bordeaux’s black sheep” because of his unique, against the grain wine making techniques. Today, Thunevin’s Bad Boy brand includes the original red Bad Boy cuvée of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and the Baby Bad Boy, which is a blend of Merlot and Grenache, which are both produced under the Bordeaux appellation. Thunevin also crafts a white Crémant de Bordeaux, as well as a pure Chardonnay and a 100% Syrah.
