The 2007 Mille e Una Notte wraps around the palate with serious depth and power. Black cherries, violets, mint, minerals, licorice and spices take shape in this voluptuous Sicilian red. The 2007 impresses for its seamless personality and fabulous overall balance. Nero d’Avola is the featured grape in Donnafugata’s flagship red blend. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017. I was quite taken with the wines I tasted from Donnafugata this year. Donnafugata is one of Sicily’s most visible estates, so it is great to see them doing so well.
Producer
Donnafugata Società Agricola
One of Italy’s finest wineries, the Donnafugata brand was born in the early 1980s by Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo. Located in Sicily, the winery is now managed by their children, José and Antonio, and grandchildren, Ferdinando and Gabriella, who follow in the footsteps of over a century of wine aficionados. A winery with integrity, the brand prides itself on their sustainable procedures, that are followed both in the vineyards and in the cellars. Inspired by an 19th century story, the name Donna Fugata, literally translates to Fleeting Woman, which refers to the chronicle of Queen Maria Carolina, who fled Naples in the early 1800s on the arrival of Napoleon’s troops. This woman decided to seek refuge in the part of Sicily where the Donnafugata now stands. The Rallo family are great enthusiasts of creative projects, specifically those that emphasis their culture and region. This passion can be seen on their artfully made labels, each with a unique image and their signature emblem of a woman with flowing hair.
