The 1991 La Turque behaves as if it wants to be the northern Rhone's answer to Richebourg and Musigny. However, with the exception of Domaine Leroy, you cannot find a Richebourg or Musigny with the richness and complexity possessed by this awesome wine. The saturated dark purple color is followed by a wine that is surprisingly lighter in the mouth than its great flavor intensity and rich extraction would suggest. It is a winemaking tour de force in that Guigal has been able to cram phenomenal levels of fruit, complexity, and richness into this velvety-textured wine without causing it to taste heavy. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2015. Last tasted 6/96.

Whenever I have the luck to drink some La Turque, I always think of the first time I tasted the wine. It was with Marcel Guigal at the restaurant La Pyramide in the Rhone Valley. He had just released the first vintage: 1985. Even he was amazed by the quality of the wine and it was from young vines. The wine has been amazing ever since. The 1991 Guigal Cote Rotie La Turque is a slightly less known beauty. Most people think of 1989 or 1990 from this period as superb. But 1991 is wonderful. I drank it last night with friends at Balthazar in New York City. This is phenomenal with smoke and spice and meaty character with ripe dark fruits. Full and velvety. Round and delicious. Great.

Complex and concentrated, this shows toast and vanilla oak flavors balanced by plenty of plum, berry and licorice notes; dense and long. Drink from 1998.--Guigal Cte-Rtie vertical. TM

Domaine Guigal
Three generations of the Guigal family have worked on this plot of land in the Côte-Rôtie that is over 24-centuries-old. As one of today’s most famous wine producers in France’s northern Rhône, the Guigal Estate was created in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis. His son Marcel took over the maison in 1961, expanding the family’s vineyard holdings. He also simultaneously bettered their overall reputation. Marcel was named Decanter Man of the Year in 2006, while his son, Philippe now acts as the operating oenologist for the domaine. The E. Guigal brand represents a rather broad collection of wines from the Rhône Valley, as the largest producer in Côte-Rôtie the firm also works as a négociant, buying grapes for some of their labels. Their three single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie productions, La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque stand out worldwide as consistent red models from the appellation. E. Guigal also offers a large lists of other wines, the dense and concentrated Hermitage, the refined St. Joseph, as well as the famous Condrieus, just to name a few.
