Aromatic, offering hints of lavender, menthol and orange peel, but on the palate this becomes an immutable block, with a kernel of cherry, black currant, licorice and mineral flavors locked within. The tannins have the upper hand now, but this should develop well. Best from 2024 through 2047. From France.—B.S.

The 2015 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru continues to show very well, unfurling in the glass with a rich bouquet of ripe plums, blackberries, dark chocolate and forest floor. On the palate, it's full-bodied, satiny and powerful, with an ample chassis of fine structuring tannins and a deep core of fruit, but the wine is shutting down and is more inscrutable than it was six months earlier. Readers with bottles in their cellars are sitting on a great example of Clos des Lambrays, one of the best produced since the 1970s, but a decade's patience is advised.

Domaine des Lambrays
Representing the nobility of Burgundy wines, Domaine des Lambrays was originally founded in 14th century, although it wasn’t until 1981, that the property was promoted to a Grand Cru status. As one of the oldest Grand Cru vineyards in the regions, Clos des Lambrays, has passed through the hands of many vinous players over the years. Since 2014 however, the estate has been under the ownership of the Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group. Planted to 100% Pinot Noir vines, the walled-off vineyard totals around 9 hectares. Stretching over the steepest slopes of Morey Grand Crus, the Clos des Lambrays is made up of three main vineyards which reveal their own distinct terroirs. In the end, the wines flawlessly portray the delicate character and sophisticated taste of their holdings within the Morey-Saint-Denis area of Burgundy’s Côtes de Nuits.
