Tasted from bottle, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a pretty and immensely charming wine bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, bergamot and rose petals, with little hint of the savory complexity to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with lively acids, appealing purity of fruit and a precise finish.
Producer
Domaine Claude Dugat
A tiny domaine with a huge reputation, Domaine Claude Dugat is located in the town of Gevrey-Chambertin. Claude is assisted by his wife, son and two daughters. They own 3 hectares of vines and rent another 3 amongst 7 appellations. His children also have a small négociant business working with the appellations of their village. All the vineyards are farmed organically and only fertilized once every 4 years in order to keep the soil fertile enough - but still poor for perfect wine grape growing. He prefers small berries and prefers to pick earlier than later in order to retain red berry fruit flavors. He does not use the pumping over technique, as he prefers to punch down the skins, in order to control the temperature during fermentation. His wines are known for their rich, concentrated styles without any over extraction. And though attractive in their youth, they are also ageworthy.
