The fascinatingly copper-colored 2004 Dom Pérignon Rosé has a beautifully delicate bouquet of red fruits, and indicates a great purity and freshness. Kept on the lees for at least nine years to smooth the tannins the 2004 reveals a weightless power on the palate. It has a deep and concentrated, highly elegant Pinot character (though Chardonnay and Pinot are more or less 50/50), and is full of finesse and freshness. The 2004 is intense and vinous, yet pure, precise and extremely fine. Adorable. During a visit at Dom Pérignon in Hautvillers in March this year, I tasted the three recent vintages of the prestige cuvée plus the often-underrated 1998. Along with the Dom Pérignon Rosé 2004, it was the most fascinating cuvée of the tasting that was as spiritual as it was adequate with regards to the history of the human Dom Pérignon.

There’s power to this vivid rosé Champagne, harnessed by a silky texture and a sense of finesse. Mineral-driven, with a rich, smoky underpinning, this offers an expansive palate of puréed raspberry, apricot preserves and hints of candied kumquat, marzipan, graphite and star anise. Drink now through 2030. From France.—A.N.

Dom Pérignon
Dom Pérignon is quite possibly the most iconic Champagne in the world. Tracing its roots back to the 17th century, when the monk, Dom Pierre Pérignon declared his ambition to create “the best wine in the world”. Today, he is known as the father of Champagne. He spent almost 50 years making the world’s first Champagne in the Abbey of Saint Pierre d’Hautvillers. During this time he set the ten founding vinification principles required in Champagne production. Three centuries later, Dom Pérignon stands as the planet’s most recognized luxury Champagne brands. The first vintage of Dom Pérignon was produced in 1921 and became the first prestige cuvée for the house. Owned by the fine-wines and spirits group, LVMH, Richard Geoffroy has been the Chef de Cave for the brand since 1990. Geoffroy alone is responsible for deciding whether or not to declare a Dom Pérignon Vintage. Made from the very best grapes, each vintage of Dom Pérignon is unique, showing notable transparencies between the varying climatic conditions. The alliance between ripeness, vibrancy, lightness and intensity in each bottle gives the wine the ability to age with suppleness and elegance.
