Hints of marzipan and apricot preserves enrich this finely meshed Champagne, with racy acidity providing a vibrant frame. Creamy on the palate, featuring black raspberry, orange liqueur, biscuit and spice notes lingering on the minerally finish. Drink now through 2026. 2,500 cases made. –AN

The 2006 Brut Millésime William Deutz is a blend of 66% Pinot, 29% Chardonnay and 5% Meunier that spent 100 months on the lees in bottle before the disgorgement. My sample was disgorged on 6 October 2015 (dosage: nine grams per liter, lot LA110D27915) and opens very clear, fine and aromatic on the nose, showing delicate fruit aromas of sweet cherries, oranges and marzipan as well as tobacco aromas and smoky notes. On the palate, this is a fresh, fine, pure and concentrated as well as elegant and structured assemblage whose finish is slightly sweet but also aromatic and round, and the mousse is remarkably fine. Tasted November 2017.
Producer
Deutz
One of the oldest members of the prestigious Grandes Marques, the Deutz House has been producing distinctive and elegant Champagnes since 1838. Founded in Aÿ, one the most important Champagne producing regions, the estate was created by the perfect pair, William Deutz and Pierre Geldermann. Deutz brought his well-established experience, after working for Bollinger, while partner Geldermann supplied the necessary capital. Today, the rather modest house is owned by Louis Roederer. Sourcing from Champagne’s finest crus, the bunches are hand-selected, pressed and carefully aged in the cool house cellars that have been carved into the historical chalky grounds. The esteemed non-vintage Brut Classic is a well-structured, yeasty styled wine, produced alongside the similarly impressive non-vintage Brut Rosé. While the vintage sparklings are the most luxurious of cuvées, the William Deutz is made from the best Pinots and Chardonnays, while the William Deutz Rosé, Brut Blanc de Blancs and Amour De Deutz are tighter and more refined examples of Deutz classical style.
