Has an enticing nose, with prune, tar, espresso and dried nuts. Full- to medium-bodied, with good supportive tannins that turn chewy on the finish and lots of dark chocolate and mocha that linger at the end. This will be worth the wait. Superintense and layered. Like a baby vintage Port. A new passito wine from Dal Forno. Best after 2009. 700 cases made. –JC

The 2003 Vigna Sere is not a new wine from Dal Forno, rather it is the former Recioto which, in this vintage, the local DOCG tasting commission rejected in its infinite wisdom. The wine possesses incredible richness and density with plenty of super-ripe dark fruit, plums, chocolate and roasted coffee beans. This opulent, generous sweet wine shows excellent balance, even if the tannins dry out somewhat on the finish, something that is unfortunately quite common in wines of this vintage. This is an especially structured dessert wine that needs to be paired with rich cheeses or chocolate-based desserts to offer its greatest pleasure. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. All of these wines from Romano Dal Forno require significant aeration to show the true breadth of this passionate grower’s innovative style. Ideally the wines should be cellared for a minimum of a few years. Readers in search of short-term gratification are advised to open these bottles at least eight to ten hours before serving. This also holds for the Valpolicella, which has become an especially massive, structured wine after Dal Forno started producing it from 100% dried fruit in the 2002 vintage. Dal Forno favors 100% new American oak for his wines, although in recent years he has brought the aging regime down considerably.

Dal Forno Romano
While the winery is recognized for its renowned Amarone della Valpolicella, there are two other wines that are produced from their estate vineyards in the same spirit of excellence, the Valpolicella Superiore, and the Vigna Seré. Although four generations of the Dal Forno family have owned this prime plot of land, the Dal Forno Romano winery was not founded until 1983. Romano Dal Forno, the man behind one of the world’s greatest Italian wines, was born right next to his family’s vineyards. He has grown up with a passion for wine, today, he is dedicated to his life’s work, developing unique viticultural and vinification techniques. Located in the Valley of Illasi, just east of Verona, Dal Forno Romano promotes the ideal balance between tradition and technology. The resulting wines are exceptionally concentrated and full of intense aromas and flavors. His extreme dedication to quality and high-standards has brought Dal Forno to the top of Valpolicella’s most celebrated and venerated producers.
