17/20 2023 – 2040

The 2015 Sociando Mallet is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc this year. It has a rather introspective bouquet, broody and earthy, although with aeration it reveals pleasant blackberry and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a little rustic and brutish at the moment with an abrasive finish that will hopefully soften by the time it is in bottle. I feel that this was just upended by the storms that swept across the region in September.

Château Sociando Mallet

Château Sociando Mallet is without a doubt the most impressive estate in the Haut-Medoc region. Nestled in the village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, it has been producing quality Cru Bourgeois for decades. Jean Gautreau, a native of the Médoc and a former wine merchant, discovered the property by chance in 1969 when he was looking for a property for a Belgian client. It was love at first sight, and he bought the estate with its 5 hectares of vines and its dilapidated buildings. Jean Gautreau completely transformed the property, expanding the vineyard, renovating the buildings and even building a brand new winery. His efforts have resulted in an impressive estate, incorporating 85 hectares of vineyards. Sociando-Mallet today stands as a monumental blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Grand Vin, with a certain aging potential, displays a typical style of wines meant for aging, with soft and youthful tannins that make it an unforgettable red.
