This large estate of 131 acres has been run brilliantly by a Belgian family, the Bonnies since their acquisition a number of years ago. The quality of the white and red have soared to exceptional heights, and this is certainly still one of the more realistically priced wines of Pessac-Lèognan and classified crus. The 2012 is a beauty, with a dense ruby/purple color, a fabulously plush, opulent texture and medium to full-bodied flavors of cassis, spicy earth and blueberry. Quite rich, yet light on its feet, this is an absolutely textbook Pessac-Lèognan, with wonderfully velvety tannins. Drink it now, or drink it in 25 years. This is a brilliant wine.

Solid, with dense layers of fig sauce, plum cake and blackberry confiture, laced with graphite and warm tar details. The long finish ripples with spice hints and black fruit, leaving a mouthwatering feel despite the heft. Best from 2017 through 2022. 8,330 cases made. –JM

Tiefes Purpur, satt in der Mitte, Granatschimmer am Rand. Offenes Bouquet, feine Röstnoten, Ledernuancen, dominikanischer Tabak, gibt immer neue Schichten frei, also ein sehr facettenreiches Nasenbild. Im Gaumen fein und elegant. Tolle Jahrgangsleistung ohne über die Grenzen zu gehen. warten (2016 - 2038)

Château Malartic Lagravière
A name to look out for, as one of Bordeaux’s remaining six Classified Growths in both white and red, Château Malartic Lagraviére is one of the appellation’s finest. Belgian couple, Michele and Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie bought the property in 1997, now the newly renovated château is in the hands of their son and daughter-in-law, Jean-Jacques and Severine. By the turn of the century, the estate had adopted organic farming and reduced yielding practices, which has led to a great deal of heighted quality. Like many Graves properties, the 47-hectare plot dedicates only a small part to white grapes, a mere 7-hectares in this case, with the majority remaining planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Famed vigneron, Michel Rolland consults for their reds. With about 60% of the crop going into the Grand Vin, using only the best of the best fruit, Malartic Lagraviére Rouge has an elegant, well-balanced nature that with time develops into a complex and impressive wine. Along with the Château’s characteristic claret, the Malartic Lagraviére Blanc offers youthful and luxurious notes, over its fresh oaked base.
