Lively cassis and damson plum fruit gives this a fresh feel, while light sanguine and singed alder notes add contrast through the finish.—J.M.

the 2016 Larrivet Haut Brion has a generous bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry, cigar box and light smoky scents that seem very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin. The new oak here seems a little ponderous and slightly occludes both the fruit and terroir expression, therefore drying out the finish and leaving a mouth-puckering effect. Hopefully this will gain more balance during its barrel maturation, and gain more cohesion and detail on the finish. At the moment, I would favor the excellent 2015 Larrivet Haut Brion. Tasted three times with consistent notes.

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion
Château Larrivet Haut-Brion was cited as one of the leading wines in the commune of Léognan as early as 1840. The Gervoson family acquired the estate in 1987 and has worked hard ever since to restore this wine's illustrious reputation. Larrivet Haut-Brion is an immensely charming 100-hectare property. The superb 19th century château also has 13 hectares of attractive grounds. The vines are grown on high and medium-size rises of Garonne gravel. The estate also features woods and meadows. An ambitious modernization program in the cellar (pneumatic winepress using inert gas, optical sorting of grapes, etc.) and vineyard (detailed soil survey for improved plot-by-plot management) has resulted in wines reputed for their elegance and character. Representing the upcoming generation of her family, Émilie Gervoson tirelessly promotes Château Larrivet Haut-Brion around the world.
