A spicy aroma of cedar and cinnamon, followed by raspberry and cherry flavors, a soft texture. Finishes with sweet fruit and firm tannins. Deceptively attractive now, but it should improve for five years or more in the cellar. A good buy for Bordeaux. Drink now through 1994. ?

Arrivage (15/20): Verschlossen, darunter rotbeerige Früchte (Johannisbeeren). Mittlerer Körper, wenig Tiefe, jedoch recht elegant. 98: Reifes, mittleres Granat, grosser Wasserrand.

The 1985 has adequate ripeness, but is somewhat dull, medium bodied, and overall a mediocre, one-dimensional wine. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/89.
Producer
Château Gazin
Among the appellation’s larger properties, Château Gazin owns a 26-hectare single-plot of vines planted on the famous upper part of the Pomerol Plateau. Bordering those of Pétrus and L’Evangile, the gravelly clay soil vineyard is planted to a majority of Merlot, with the remaining 10% of land split among Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc plantings. Originally established in the late 1700s, the estate has gone through several owners before the Bailliencourt family bought the château in 1917. Generations of successful Bailliencourts have managed the estate, and since 1990 Nicolas de Bailliencourt has been in charge. Château Gazin traditionally vinifies their fruit then the wine is aged in 50% new oak barriques for 15-18 months. Producing rich styled wines, that are forward and opulent, the Grand Vin, Gazin shows the signature house style perfectly. The winery also produces a second wine, L’Hospitalet de Gazin, which is made in the same spirit of heritage.
