Shows apricot tart, with hints of candied lemons on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with lovely concentration and a lemony, spicy, almost flinty aftertaste. Impressive for the vintage. Very lively and zingy on the finish. Best after 2009. –JS .
Producer
Château Climens
Known as the “Lord of Barsac”, Château Climens produces one of Bordeaux’s greatest sweet wines. Ranked as a First Growth since the 1855 Classification, Climens in the leading property in the Barsac commune. With an exclusive limited production, the estate is outclassed only by the abundant production of Château d’Yquem. The Lurton family has owned the property since 1971, today, Bérénice Lurton devotes all of her energy to crafting magical wines, vintage after vintage. Situated at the southern edge of the appellation, the limestone terroir lies on the highest point in Barsac, averaging in around 20 meters above-sea-level. The 31-hectare vineyard is planted to one single grape variety, Sémillon. This gives the wines outstanding aromatic complexity and freshness, despite the absence of Sauvignon Blanc. The top-wine, Climens, is a weightless pure Sémillon, perfectly balanced by its irreverence and grace making it one of the finest examples of Sauternes.
