A textbook St.-Julien, offering tightly layered dark plum, currant and blackberry fruit, with a strong graphite spine and dark tar and mouthwatering pastis notes on the finish. A well-built, confident wine. Best from 2017 through 2027. 20,000 cases made. –JM

The 2011 Beychevelle has a well defined bouquet with brambly black fruit, bilberry, cedar and light graphite scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity, a dash of white pepper and truffle, with just a hint of cassis on the Margaux-like finish. Not bad, though not the best that Philippe Blanc has ever made. It reflects the limitations of the vintage. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
90 James Suckling
An attractive 2011 with lots of blackberry, hazelnut and walnut character. Medium to full body with chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2017.

Leichter Wein - streng vinifiziert. warten (2018 - 2035)

Château Beychevelle
Located in the Saint-Julien region of Bordeaux, this Classed Growth, Château Beychevelle has one of the most recognizable labels in all of Médoc. Featuring an estuary boat, the labels show a sail lowered in salute to the estates former owner, the Duc d’Epernon, an Admiral of France. Better known as the “Dragon Boat” wine, it has become one of the most sought after wines around the world, especially in China. Now a sizable 90-hectare property, its vineyards are dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Petit Verdot growth. More recently, they have heavily invested into the renovation of their wine making facilities, cellars, and visitor center. Today the beautiful winery, designed by Arnaud Boulain and Atelier BPM stands with glass walls allowing guests to fully partake in the winemaking process.
