01: Tiefes Granat mit violetten Reflexen. Intensives, fast verschwenderisches Brombeeren-, Cassisbouquet. 18/20 2004 – 2014

A great sleeper of the vintage, this fully mature wine, made by Helene Garcin, has loads of deep raspberry and black cherry fruit with hints of licorice, toasty oak, and spice box. It is plush, succulent, and hedonistic, yet at the same time complex. I loved their 1998, and this wine seems to have turned out just as well. It has reached full maturity, where it should stay for at least a 10 to 15-year period.

Lots of crushed berry, flower and vanilla aromas follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a balanced finish. Best after 2006. 3,080 cases made. ?JS

Château Barde-Haut
Located on an elevated limestone plateau in the eastern portion of Saint-Émilion, Château Barde-Haut has been owned by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard (family of Florence and Daniel Cathiard of Smith Haut Lafitte) since 2000. It is managed by Hélène Garcin Levesque who is also in charge of Clos de l'Église in Pomerol and Haut-Bergey and Branon in Pessac-Léognan. Its 16 hectares are planted to 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc which produce 3500 cases of Château Barde-Haut as well as a second wine, Le Vallon de Barde-Haut.
