The 2016 Pedesclaux is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, picked between 29 September and 18 October, matured in 60% new oak. It has a tightly-wound bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit, a touch of iodine and graphite. I like the subtle nature of this Pedesclaux, the brooding intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, crisp and fresh, a gorgeous salinity and a long and persistent, lightly spiced finish. This leaves the 2015 Pedesclaux far behind

Ironclad grip frames a core of dark currant fruit, with flecks of tobacco and pepper chiming in on the finish. Textbook Pauillac.—J.M.

Château Pédesclaux
Perhaps one of Pauillac’s least well-known estates, Château Pédesclaux is a gifted classified Médoc growth. Just forty-five years after the estate was founded by wine trader Pierre-Urbain Pédesclaux, the château was ranked as a 5ème Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. While the estate’s title ultimately became Pierre-Urbain’s namesake, the property, however, went through several owners before landing in the hands of Françoise and Jacky Lorenzetti in 2009. By 2013, Emmanuel Cruse joined the Pédesclaux team as managing director - further accentuating the estate’s new modern approach. The renovation of the château and winemaking facilities in 2015, along with the impeccable vineyard management, the estate has seen a true boom in quality. The Pauillac château produces a wine as complex as its terroir. The Grand Vin Château Pédesclaux is a dense Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc blend created in a charming style with an even more attractive edge.
