As I indicated last year, quality has improved dramatically at this estate, and the 2006 is a quintessentially elegant Bordeaux displaying a dark ruby/purple color, a lovely bouquet of forest floor, sweet cherries, cranberries, and black currants, medium body, a textured, sweet, tannic mouthfeel, and a long finish. Everything is beautifully pure as well as perfectly balanced in this outstanding effort. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Excellent value.
Producer
Château Cantemerle
Thanks to their unique terroir towards the southern end of the Médoc, Château Cantemerle produces complex, balanced wines that earned them the Grand Cru Classè title in the famous 1855 classification. The 87-hectare estate is planted with an amalgamate of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon which is quite unusual for the Left Bank, and a surprising 40% Merlot, with the remaining 10% split between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Passing through several owners, the property has landed in the hands of a mutual insurance company, Groupe SMABTP in the early 1980s. Due to their unrivaled financial status, the group heavily invested into the property, completely expanding, renovating, restructuring the winery, and replanting the vineyard. As their improvements continue to accrue, their production has continued to grow and become more valuable. The estate continues to produce high-quality, rich and vibrantly dark-fruited wines. Médoc at its best.
