With the estate’s best fruit, the 2009 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni puts aromatic intensity at the top of its playbill. It opens with a dark, inky color and massive aromas of mocha, toasted espresso bean, spicy cedar wood, tar and black asphalt. Those jackhammer tannins aren’t going anywhere. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

Marco Caprai is a person I have come to deeply admire over the years. He can be rough around the edges, but I suppose this trait has served him well. No matter how you slice it, he is a formidable ambassador for Umbria, Sagrantino and, of course, his brand. He is one of the most talented wine promoters and communicators in Italy today.

Pure black cherry fruit flavors show savory notes of herb-marinated olive, graphite and the smoky, meaty character of grilled portobello mushroom. Fresh and focused, this suave red has a tannic, spiced finish. Best from 2016 through 2029.
Producer
Caprai Arnaldo
Arnaldo Caprai is hands-down one of the country’s leading Sagrantino producers. Founded in 1971 by textile entrepreneur, Arnaldo Caprai, the estate was soon passed down to his son, Marco in 1988. Today, the property is home to 150 hectares – 90 of which are currently under vine – close to the Montefalco, Gualdo Cattaneo and Bevagna villages. Focusing on Sagrantino - the region’s native grape - that has been cultivated in Montefalco for over 400 years, the family produces wines under the Montefalco DOC, Grechetto dei Colli Martani DOC, and the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG. Robert Parker notes, “No matter how you slice it, he (Marco Caprai) is a formidable ambassador for Umbria, Sagrantino and, of course, his brand. He is one of the most talented wine promoters and communicators in Italy today.”
