This blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Sangiovese and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon has one of the most impressive track records of a modern Tuscan blend that I can think of. The 2016 Il Blu is a beautifully balanced and precise blend that pits the freshness and authenticity of Sangiovese against the softness and fruitiness of the Merlot. Although the Sangiovese plays a supporting role in the blend, its influence and signature go far to creating the overall identity of this special wine. It's a very nice effort to celebrate with a grilled T-bone. Some 35,000 bottles were made.
With the 2019 vintage, all of Brancaia's wines are certified organic. To celebrate their 20th anniversary as vintners in Maremma (this estate owns vineyards in both Coastal Tuscany and in Chianti Classico), Brancaia will be releasing 900 cases of a 2015 Ilatraia Special Edition (packaged in a wooden box).
Brancaia
Swiss couple, Brigitte and Bruno Widmer own 75-hectares of vineyards that make up La Brancaia estate. Split among three properties, there is Brancaia from Castellina in Chianti, Poppi from Radda in Chianti, and once again, Brancaia in Maremma from Grosseto. Each land-holding is similarly planted with Sangiovese and French varieties, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Viognier and Marsanne. The three unique plots are united by one thing, the same devoted team of individuals that are always working to achieve greater grape quality. Today, La Brancaia is managed by the Widmer’s daughter, Barbara and her husband, Martin Kronenberg. The estate continues to flourish making four new wooded reds, and one unoaked fresh white.
