The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva is a lovely expression that deserves attention. I am impressed by the pristine and mellow nature of the bouquet that is enhanced with bright tones of red cherry, wild berry, spice and lightly toasted almond. Sangiovese is blended with 20% Merlot and aged in oak for 15 months. There are sweet oak flavors, although that spice is well integrated within the fleshy and rich nature of the fruit. The wine is tight and linear on the close, and could use another year or so to flesh out further.  Barbara Widmer's Brancaia offers a stunning set of new releases with wines from some of the best recent vintages including 2010 and 2013. If you are a Brancaia fan, as am I, you should not miss these wines.

Blackberry, black cherry and light spice flavors butt up against gruff tannins. Tobacco and underbrush elements line the moderate finish. Drink now through 2020. 3,000 cases imported. –BS

Brancaia
Swiss couple, Brigitte and Bruno Widmer own 75-hectares of vineyards that make up La Brancaia estate. Split among three properties, there is Brancaia from Castellina in Chianti, Poppi from Radda in Chianti, and once again, Brancaia in Maremma from Grosseto. Each land-holding is similarly planted with Sangiovese and French varieties, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Viognier and Marsanne. The three unique plots are united by one thing, the same devoted team of individuals that are always working to achieve greater grape quality. Today, La Brancaia is managed by the Widmer’s daughter, Barbara and her husband, Martin Kronenberg. The estate continues to flourish making four new wooded reds, and one unoaked fresh white.
