The 2012 Vendimia Seleccionada is a pure Tempranillo from head-pruned vineyards planted in 1950, fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in used French and American barrels. It has a textbook nose of Ribera, with aromas of plums, cherries and strawberries, very typical, with sweet spices from the barrels. An exemplary crianza. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with good weight of fruit, round tannins and flavors that bring back all the notes found in the nose, coming through as a very good Ribera. 20,000 bottles produced. Drink 2014-2017.
Producer
Bodegas J.A. Calvo Casajús
Located in the foothills of Duero Valley, Bodegas Calvo Casajús sits in the northern part of the Ribera del Duero appellation. Founder and vintner, José Alberto Calvo Casajús has had the privilege of growing up in a long established winemaking family, also a baker, José now produces some of the finest wine in the region. The 20-hectare property is among the oldest vineyards in the DO. Established in 1993, José left the local wine cooperative in hopes of producing the best wines from his premium fruit. Today, the winery is equipped with top-of-the-line technology, producing three wines that are rooted with the spirit of their founding Duero shores. Their wines include pure Tempranillo, hand-harvested wines. The full-bodied, Casajús Antiguos Viñedos, and the velvety Casajús Vendimia Seleccionada, are both reminiscent of Bordeaux-like texture. While their most famous, the NIC, dedicated to his children, Nicolas and Catalina, is made from a single 1.5-hectare plot. This extremely limited production artisanal wine follows the newest winemaking methods, resulting in a modern, but genuine Ribera del Duero Tempranillo.
