The 2008 Pesquera Crianza has a fresh, lifted, slightly herbaceous bouquet that complements the red fruit profile. It perhaps lacks the fruit intensity of recent vintages but it has fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and has a crisp raspberry and strawberry entry interlaced with spice and a touch of soy, although it tapers away toward the slightly angular finish. Drink now-2020. Alejandro Fernandez was instrumental in bringing Ribera del Duero to international prominence since he established his bodega back in 1972. The 65 hectares of pure Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) vine lie on south-facing gravel inclines and Fernandez is known for his late, meticulous picking, as well as long macerations and extended aging in both French and American oak. But firstly, let us begin with his second property, Condado de Haza, which constitutes 200 hectares of Tinto Fino vine that was planted in 1989.

Bodegas Condado de Haza - Alejandro Fernandez
After Vega Sicilia, Tinto Pesquera is considered by many as the second greatest name for producing exceptional wines in Ribera del Duero. It was originally established in 1972 when Alejandro Fernández and his wife Esperanza Rivera of Pesquera del Duero initiated the renaissance of Spain's Ribera del Duero appellation with the area's first modern wire-trained vineyard, their Viña Alta in Pesquera. After 10 years of hard work, its reputation for excellent quality had been established across all of their wines – Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. Around the same time, Alejandro spied a neglected slope along the Duero River which had the appearance of being an ideal vineyard site. This was used to create their second estate, Condado de Haza. Here they produce wines that are generally more approachable earlier on but are just as delicious with ample fruit and distinctive Ribera del Duero terroir.
