The 2009 Matarromera Crianza comes from Pago de San Roman and it is aged for 14 months in 70% American and 30% French oak with 70% new barrels. It has a clean, pleasant bouquet that unfurls nicely: black cherries, raisin and a touch of blueberry that remains nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. There is a touch of aggression toward the finish with spice and white pepper. It needs to show a little more finesse but it demonstrates fine persistency. Drink now-2016.
Producer
Bodega Matarromera
Partially hidden along the north hillside of the Duero Valley, Bodegas Matarromera overlooks the picturesque gorge in Valladolid. The 80-hectare estate produces well-known Ribera del Duero wines, featuring 100% Tinta del Pais, which is the local name for Tempranillo. Felix Gonzalez now oversees the innovative facilities and winemaking processes, as compared to previous years when the creator of the Matarromera Group, Luis Carlos Moro Gonzalez, was heading the vinification. The estate actually offers more than their award-winning wines, they also make cosmetics, olive oil and spirits, organize tours, and not to mention, they own their own hotel and restaurant.
