This shows how powerful Argentine Malbec can be, with a torrent of blackberry, boysenberry and bittersweet ganache notes. But there's exceptional drive and focus here as well, with a great graphite spine driving through the spice- and floral-infused finish. A stunner for its combination of power and precision, and the best wine yet from this winery. Best from 2011 through 2016. 400 cases made. –JM
Producer
Bodega Catena Zapata
Nestled in the Andes foothills lies Catena Zapata, in Argentina’s most well-known wine-growing regions, Mendoza. As the country’s top estate, Catena Zapata is led by Nicolás Catena himself. Nicolás was the first person from South America to receive the prestigious Decanter Man of the Year award in 2009. With his deeply founded belief that Argentina could produce world-class wines, he began piecing together this wonderful vineyard starting in the 1960s. Today, these superbly managed high-altitude vineyards, ranging from impressive heights – 1000 meters to 1480 meters above sea-level – are at the heart of the bodegas’ success. Constantly improving their viticultural and vinification techniques, the innovative team now includes Nicolás’ daughter, Laura who has looked after the Research and Development program since 2001. Their incredible wines show notable transparencies between sites, altitudes, vintages and grape varietals, making Catena Zapata the benchmark Argentinian producer.
