Dark, with iodine-tinged black fruit and a hint of polished oak on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with tangy oak on the palate, fine tannins and a long, refined finish. A serious wine from 40-year-old Montepulciano vines. Best after 2005. 450 cases made. –JS

Azienda Agricola Oasi degli Angeli
The ambitious Oasi degli Angeli is on the leading-edge of wineries in the Marche. Third generation, Eleonora Rossi and her companion in life, Marco Casolanetti who is also the estate’s oenologist, have been crafting some of Italy’s most intriguing reds for quite some time. High up in Cupra Marittima, this quaint property, complete with a small guest house known as an agritursimo, lies between the Apennines and the Adriatic coast in the Marche region. Detail-oriented practices are carried out in both the vineyards and in the cellar. With low yields, the grapes are split in half for fermentation – carried out in both steel tanks and open wooden vats – before a long period of maceration, after maturation takes place in small new casks. According to Eleonora and Marco, is not important if the wine is technically perfect, but that the wine shows personality. The real added value at Oasi degli Angeli is clearly the human factor. The estate produces two reference-point wines, the exceptional, award winning pure Montepulciano, Kurni and the newer wine, Kupra, an intensely styled Grenache that is a step above the rest.
