I hope one day to have another chance to taste a vertical of Roccamonfina Terra di Lavoro because I have a strong feeling the 2010 will occupy a place among the very finest vintages produced on this tiny vineyard on the slopes of the Roccamonfina volcano. An exotic melange of tar, smoke, graphite, blackberry jam and savory herbs explode from the glass. The 2010 is intense and full-bodied, yet also incredibly elegant. A big, breathtaking wine, the 2010 continues to build all the way through to a deeply resonant, expressive finish. I would choose to leave this uttterly beguiling Campanian red alone for the better part of a decade, but readers are going to have a very hard time excercising that patience. This is a fabulous effort from proprietors Arturo and Dora Celentano, and their long-time winemaker Riccardo Cotarella. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040. Galardi fans, of which I am one, will be delighted to learn that the estate plans to introduce a second wine beginning with the 2013 harvest, which is great news, considering the flagship Terra di Lavoro typically ages at a glacial pace.

A dark, beefy red, with layers of game, underbrush and wild herb to the dark blackberry, cassis and plum skin notes. Full yet fine tannins add grip, as the fruit and hints of mocha and ash highlight the finish. Best from 2014 through 2025. 5,500 cases made. - NW (December 31, 2012)

Fattoria Galardi is family-owned by an ambitious group of cousins, Maria Luisa Murena, Arturo and Dora Celentano and Francesco Catello. They are all dedicated to making the highest quality wine, even if that means only producing one label. Situated on the volcanic slopes of Campania, the vineyards are perched among chestnut groves at 400 meters above-sea-level. The vineyards benefits from Mediterranean Sea breezes and great amounts of sun exposure, but the terroir is not always cooperative. Their single production, icon wine, Terra di Lavoro amusingly translates to Land of Work, which reflects the challenges of cultivating among these extreme conditions and rocky soils. This is known as Campania's first great cult wine, it was originally released in 1994 and has continued to charm and allure wine enthusiasts ever since. Consulting winemaker Riccardo Cotarella, has left an indelible impression on both the Galardi winery, and the region as a whole – redefining the Campania vinification style.
