Dark and juicy, yet tangy and driven, with fresh acidity helping to pump the melted licorice, braised fig and currant paste notes along, while graphite and iron notes check in on the nice, grippy finish. Rock-solid. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2011. 2,800 cases made. –JM
Producer
Anwilka Vineyard
Located only seven kilometers from the ocean, in Stellenbosch’s leading Helderberg region, Anwilka has emerged as one of the best red wine producers in the Cape, if not the world. The estate is an amalgamation between Bruno Prats, who previously owned the well-known Saint-Estèphe Second Growth, Cos d’Estournel, and Hubert de Bouard de Laforest, the co-proprietor of Château Angèlus, and Lowell Jooste, whose family owns Klein Constantia. Anwilka found that it’s best to use simple techniques during the winemaking process, extracting only the very best from the terroir’s unique grapes. Their seaside vineyard prospers from cool breezes and good drainage, producing deep and intense Bordeaux styled wines. The estate produces three wines: Anwilka, Petit Frère and La Bella Rossa, a limited release of an off-dry Armarone-styled red.
