Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc. 19/20 trinken – 2025

The 2011 Tignanello demonstrates a very ripe and fruit-forward personality with bursting cherry and blackberry folded within sweet spice, moist tobacco and honey-almond paste. Its texture is heavy and dense with sticky spots of sweetness (the alcohol is recorded at 14.5%). With such a fruit-heavy personality, the wine doesn’t reach the soaring heights or brilliant complexity we see in cooler vintages. It should veer toward a greater sense of focus and tightness with more bottle age. Summer heat in 2011, resulting from drying winds that caused spots of heat stress across the Italian peninsula, shows its mark in the grand wines of Italy’s flagship estate. I was especially interested to see how Tignanello and Solaia would perform this year. No doubt, these are standout wines, but there’s no denying the ripe tones packed deep within the flesh of these two vino italiano protagonists. They do not reach the grand heights of recent years.

A powerful red, with plum, blackberry and black cherry flavors that border on jammy, all kept in check by juicy acidity and firm, dense tannins and leather and earth accents. Finishes long, with a mineral flourish. Best from 2015 through 2023. 8,333 cases imported.

Antinori - Tenuta Tignanello
Tignanello, for most, the original Super-Tuscan, was first crafted in 1971 and has since remained a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. The 350-hectare estate lies amongst the picturesque hills between the Greve and Pesa River valleys, with 147 hectares of vineyards spread across the Chianti Classico appellation. Since the mid-1800s, this legendary estate, more than anywhere else, has expressed the Antinori’s family values: to display the union between tradition and modernity with wines that are genuine and characterized by their origins. Today, the leading figure in Tuscan wines, Piero Antinori, noted for his innovations and experiments in the field, manages the Marchesi Antinori group with his three daughters. Tignanello is home to two of the most influential wines ever created. The family’s flagship, Solaia and the first Super-Tuscan, Tignanello. These two iconic wines are marked by Antinori’s signature quality, they are vibrant yet complex and clearly express the presence of their unique terroir.
