Margaux (Ex-Château) 2003 75cl

This was the finest performance by this wine that I have seen since it was released. I did not expect the 2003 Chateau Margaux to show this well in a vintage where the southern part of the Medoc was clearly less impressive than the north. However, it is a beautiful, dark plum/purple-tinged effort with sensational aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a youthfulness, precision and freshness that belie what one generally associates with this vintage. It can be drunk now and over the next 15-20 years. Kudos to Chateau Margaux. <br/>

Ultraconcentrated, with layers and layers of fruit and superfine tannins. Plenty of fruit, mineral and meat character. Full-bodied yet refined and classy, it coats your palate with gorgeous fruit and ripe tannins. Truly superb. One of the wines of the vintage. Best after 2012. 10,830 cases made. JS

08: Aufhellendes Purpur-Rubin. Offenes Bouquet, gekochte Pflaumen, Glutamatnoten, wirkt von der Süsse her erotisch mit heisser Frucht. Im Gaumen im Innern ein Wahnsinnskonzentrat, aussen momentan mit einer recht weichen Hülle überzogen, im Nachklang spürt man dann aber doch die griffigen, noch sehr verlangenden Gerbstoffe, Jasmintee und Korinthen im Finale. Das Potential (19/20) ist höher einzustufen, als der aktuelle Genuss. (18/20). Potentialwertung liegt bei 19/20. 09: Nach fast 100 Toskanerweinen in 5 Tagen holte Henri Prosperi www.ristorantehenri.com in Viarreggio diesen Wein aus seinem Privatkeller und servierte ihn blind. Es war Bordeaux! Es war wie Heimkommen! Es war einfach geil. Weich und rundet sich schon recht gut ab, was auch am Jahrgang 2003 liegen könnte. (19/20). 15: Extrem jugendliche Farbe, viel Purpur mit violettem Schimmer. Während der Haut-Brion und der Mouton klar den heissen Jahrgang anzeigten, ist das Bouquet vom Margaux voll frisch gepflückter Beeren, Cassis, Himbeeren und wilde Kirschen. Die Nase zeigt also eine dramatische Fruchtkonzentration. Weiter geht es im Gaumen mit einem ebenso dramatisch konzentrierten, extrem stoffigen Extrakt, die massiven, jedoch feinen Tannine bilden eine royale Adstringenz und der Wein endet so, wie er begonnen hat, als schier überfruchtig. Hier findet man – ganz deutliche Parallelen zu seinem eigenen 1983. Und dieser liegt bei 20-Punkten. Und dieser Margaux 2003 wird mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit auch dorthin wandern. (19/20). 16: Sattes Purpur, dichte Mitte, am Rand nur wenig aufhellend. Wuchtige Nase, fleischige Spuren (Glutamat), wilden Cabernet anzeigend, Lakritze. Nach ein paar Minuten immer mineralischer werdend. Im Gaumen dick, reich, schier bombig, viel Süsse und so wie ein schier weiniger Margaux-Likör daherkommend, im Finale gedörrte Feigen und mit einem Anflug von Vintage-Port versehen. Er befindet sich geschmacklich weit ausserhalb der Bordeaux-Klassik.

Full, saturated red-ruby. Knockout nose combines redcurrant, tropical chocolate, leather, woodsmoke and nutty oak with exotic chocolate mint and coffee liqueur; still manages to retain floral lift even in this beastly vintage. Then wonderfully fat, sweet and full, even if it comes across as almost heavy following the ineffable 2005 and 2004 examples. But "relatively inelegant" for Margaux still suggests a degree of refinement that few chateaux can match in the greatest vintages. A hugely rich and dense wine that finishes with elevated but ripe tannins and great length, with a subtle suggestion of dry spices. Pontallier says the terroir will take over in 20 years, "like with the '82." Splendid.
