The 2000 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is spectacular, and certainly a noteworthy rival to the 1996, 1995, and even the extraordinary 1982. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, this effort has a dense saturated purple color, a singular/distinctive yet possibly controversial aromatic smorgasbord existing of creme de cassis, vanilla, and violets, but also tapenade and tree bark. No doubt the Petit Verdot has imparted a certain almost olive-like component to the wine's aromatic profile. In the mouth, it is a wine of extraordinary density, opulence, great presence, and richness. As the 2000 sits in the glass, notes of lavender and melted licorice emerge along with the distinctive tapenade aromas interwoven with creme de cassis, espresso roast, and cedar. The wine is full-bodied, with extraordinary purity and a tremendous texture. I suspect this wine will be relatively approachable young but evolve effortlessly. This is a dramatic, almost flamboyant style that is not classic Pauillac in one sense, but a classic wine. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.

Classic character. Intense aromas of currant and minerals follow through to full-bodied palate, with loads of velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Some people find this herbaceous, but it reminds me of a currant bush more than something green. This character is due to a higher percent of Petit Verdot than normal. Muscular Pichon. Best after 2010. ?JS

Lot of currants and berries with a slightly stewed-fruit character. It’s full and round with soft tannins and a fruity finish. Needs to be decanted an hour or two before serving. Succulent wine.

01: Fassprobe (17/20): In der Nase viel florale Würztöne, Tabak und grüne Cabernet-Spuren, die aber mit einer versöhnlich süssen, wohl von den Barriquen herstammenden Note ausgeglichen werden, Cassis und Brombeeren, wirkt im Ansatz zwar füllig, aber doch erstaunlich leicht. Im Gaumen viel Stoff, weich, samtig im Ansatz, wiederum diese Pfefferschoten- und Cabernet-Würznoten, ausgeglichene, feine Tanninstruktur, guter Rückhalt, aber trotz schöner Fülle fehlt hier etwas die Konzentration und die Kraft eines doch als sehr gross gehandelten Jahrganges. Ist das Finesse? Oder zu wenig rigorose Selektion? Irgendwie erinnert die ganze Übung an den ebenfalls etwas zu oberflächlich geratenen Pichon-Lalande 1990! Von der erotischen Ausstrahlung und seinem gefälligen populären Geschmack her wird er sicher viele Anhänger finden. Wir werden diesem Wein nach der Flaschenfüllung eine weitere Chance geben und dann eventuell neu justieren, was aber angesichts der mangelnden Kraft eher fraglich ist. Kurz vor der Füllung im Jahr 2002: Ein fetter, opulenter, fast cremiger Wein mit einer berauschenden Frucht- und auch Barriquensüsse, viel Druck im Finale. Wenn ich ihm nur 17/20 Punkte gebe, dann werde ich den Pichon-Lalande-Fanclub aufhetzen. Er ist ein gewinnender Blender, der nicht mit einer wahren Pauillac-Grösse aufwartet, sondern eben halt mit verschwenderischer Erotik. Und da Wein nicht alles im Leben ist, bin ich als Mann von einer so verschwenderischen Erotik doch ein bisschen geblendet. (18/20). 07: Sehr dunkles Purpur-Granat, rubiner Rand. Ein Powerbouquet mit einer unbändige Süsse, Amarenakirschen, Edelhölzer, dominikanischer Tabak, Moschus, öffnet sich nur langsam und zeit enorm viel Druck. Dichter, fleischiger Gaumen, enorm konzentriertes Extrakt, gebündelt, geschmeidige, aber doch noch verlangende Tannine, extreme Länge. Zeigt sich nun doch grösser, als früher vermutet. 10: Nussig, röstig, viel Caramel und Milchkaffee, rotes Pflaumenmus. Samtiger Gaumen, veloursartige Textur, wirkt etwas avantgardistisch, weil nach 10 Jahren sollte die Barrique nicht mehr geschmacklich do im Vordergrund stehen. Erotik contra Typizität. Dürfte als 2000er Bordeaux schon ein Bisschen mehr Fleisch auf den Rippen haben. Momentan 17/20. 12: Reifendes Weinrot, etwas matt, mit aufhellendem Rand. Gemüsiges Bouquet, etwas Pfefferschoten und Cornichons, eine versöhnende Süsse zeigend. Erster Genuss im Gaumen verleihend, etwas mürbe Tannine, doch auch hier kommt die grünliche Note durch. Enttäuscht ein bisschen vom grossen Jahrgangsimage her.
