After a long and varied history, Hungary’s wines are experiencing somewhat of a renaissance. Many smaller estates, have replanted and started to cultivate across the nation and in turn, are producing beautiful wines. Hungarian wines represent the perfect balance between traditional winemaking methods and modern developments. There are 22 designated wine-regions, growing hundreds of varietals – making this a country of a wide range of wines. Amongst these 22 wine-regions, there are four standout areas: Eger, Tokaj, Villány and Somló. Eger produces award-winning fresh wines, while Tokaj is Hungary’s most famous wine region, producing the famous noble rot wines, in particularly the sweet Tokaji Aszú. Villány, to the south, produces wonderful, lush red wines, while the northern region of Somló offers bold, spicy whites. Hungarian wines are worth exploring, with various wine regions and local styles, each wine is diverse and begging to be discovered.
