I have to say that I don’t drink Vintage Port that often in the heat of the summer, but last night I did. I had some wine producers over for a barbecue at home, and after some Brunello and Bordeaux, the ice cream and cigars came out, and everyone said, “Vintage Port!” I went down to my cellar and found a bottle of Warre 1977. I have always been a great fan of 1977, even though a number of Vintage Port aficionados say the vintage is overrated. I think that the wines will stay very much the same for decades ahead. This was true of such great vintages as 1963 and 1927. Anyway, the Warre was beautiful now. It showed lots of dried fruits and Christmas cake character on the nose and palate. Medium sweet. It was full-bodied with loads of flavor and an intensely flavorful finish. It was perfect to drink. 94 points.Find the wine.
Producer
Warre's
Originally founded by two Englishmen in 1670, Warre’s reputation today boasts a long history as the oldest British Port company. A pioneer in the field, Warre’s productions represent the best of tradition and quality, turning out great Ports year after year. With their own 350-year history in Port trade, the Symington family acquired Warre’s in 2006. Currently, six members of the Symingtons are involved in the day to day activities. The estate encompasses several great properties in Portugal, including Quinta da Cavadinha (46 hectares) in the Upper Douro region, Quinta do Retiro Antigo (40 hectares) in the Rio Torto Valley and Quinta da Telhada (35 hectares), which is found in the most remote areas of the Douro Valley. The family’s unrivalled experience in the Port industry has ensured Warre’s consistent production of outstanding wines, from traditional Late Bottled Vintage Ports to 20-year-old Tawnies to their characteristic Warrior Reserve Port that has been produced since the 1750s, Warre’s is certainly a legendary Port producer.
