While the Cortese grape did not have a reputation as a quality variety in the 1800s, this all changed when the Soldati family founded the La Scolca in 1919. Their unwavered focus on the exclusive production of Cortese has led to decades of successful wines. The family reinvented their vinification process by introducing stainless steel fermentation tanks, which allowed the grapes to retain their crisp acidity and structured aroma. Today, the estate is managed by Giorgio Soldati, the founder’s great-grandson and his daughter, Chiara, representing the fifth generation. Located about 50-kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, La Scolca’s 50 hectares of vineyards benefit from the temperate maritime climate, cool mountain winds and sun exposure. Home of Piedmont’s oldest Cortese vines, some as old as 60-years-old, the property sits in the Rovereto Superiore region of the commune of Gavi. The house produces spectacular, complex and concentrated age-worthy wines. La Scolca is a quality Gavi producer.
