There may be no other California producer whose Chardonnays might be mistaken for white Burgundies. Kistler Vineyards was created in 1978, by Steve Kistler. He continues to oversee the vineyards, while Mark Bixler runs the business side of the winery. They produce a multiple single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from vineyards from the Sonoma Coast, the Sonoma Mountains as well as Carneros. All Chardonnay vineyards are planted with the same clone enabling the vineyards individuality to surface and sculpt the wine. While not all of their whites are consistently tense, mineral-driven wines like many white Burgundies are, there is still lovely delineation, refinement and poise that is thoroughly reminiscent of old world class and charm.
