The 2014 Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese #8 is intense and clear on the nose and displays fine botrytis flavors along with aromatic herbal aromas of curry plant. Full of finesse and piquancy on the palate, with beautifully clear mirabelle plum and nectarine flavors, this is a highly elegant and finesse-full beauty with a lush mid-palate and a very fine and elegant, nicely salty and mouth-watering finish. There is so much intensity here, but it's also drinkable and complexity! There was another Auslese GK #9 that was auctioned in Trier for 770 Euros.<br/>"We started picking 2.5 days before the rain came on October 7, 8 and 9. We harvested without pause and were ready October 16," says Egon Müller, adding, "Perhaps we should have begun earlier but we were right to pick so quickly. During the rain, the acidity got lost and we experienced a similar situation like 2006. We have saved our Spätlesen before the rain, the Scharzhof Riesling during the rain and the Kabinett after the rain, whereas the Auslese was picked on the very last day." The quantity was "comparatively good," at least it was more than 2012 and 2013, but "we ended up with 27 or 28 hectoliters per hectare." Good news: The 2015 vintage yielded 30 hectoliters per hectare, but includes all the predicates except of Eiswein.

Racy and redolent of fresh-cut apple, peach tart and unripe pear. Very fresh and well-structured, with tarragon and spice notes. Minerally and elegantly framed on the long, pure-tasting finish. A monumental white. Drink now through 2040. 15 cases imported.  –KM
Producer
Egon Müller Scharzhof
One of the greatest producers in Germany, Egon Müller IV is the current owner of the Scharzhof farm which was originally founded in 1797 by Frenchman, Jean-Jacques Koch. According to history, however, the land was probably used as far back as the Romans for grape growing. After the death of Jean-Jacques, the property was divided among his 7 children. His daughter Elisabeth married Felix Müller, a native of the Black Forest, and through inheritance and further purchases, the two were able to more or less double the size of the property by the 1850s. Elisabeth's second son, Egon Müller I was instrumental in creating the reputation that the Scharzhof estate enjoys to this day by promoting the estate through world exhibitions. The domaine was passed down through the Egon family, until it was passed onto Egon Müller IV who is at the helm. Egon favors a minimalist approach as did his father and believes that all the quality comes from the vineyard. It is his responsibility to pack the full potential into the bottle with little intervention. All of his wines come from the Scharzhof vineyard - including a QbA called Scharzhof Riesling, Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and occasionally Ice Wine. They are some of the purist expressions of Riesling produced today.
