The Non-Vintage Rose is a bright salmon color, with a Burgundian-like nose of cherries, strawberries, and flowers. Deep yet delicate, dry, zesty, vibrant flavors cut a full impression on the palate. Readers should also note the uniformity of the tiny pinpoint bubbles. This is a dazzling rose to drink over the next 4-5 years. It was only recently that I discovered and began extolling the wines of Egly-Ouriet. I realize the large Champagne firms dominate Champagne sales in this country, but one of the most encouraging trends is that small, high quality estate bottlers are now beginning to receive some representation. Egly-Ouriet's Champagnes are so good that I have begun buying them to drink chez moi. The new releases are gorgeous examples of just how rich Champagne can be without being too heavy or cumbersome. Readers will be delighted to know that this small estate prints the date of disgorgement on each bottle, a practice that should be followed by all Champagne producers. Given the intensity of these exquisite wines, they should be drunk with food rather than served as an aperitif.

A crowd-pleaser, this is open-knit, with a lively bead and great balance. Shows hints of plum, black raspberry, blanched almond, ground ginger and white pepper. The fresh finish echoes a smoky mineral note. Drink now through 2015. –AN

Egly Ouriet
One of the more impressive family-run properties, the House of Egly Ouriet is a very experienced small grower-producer in Champagne, with about ten hectares under vines. Founded in 1930, the estate lies close to the village of Ambonnay, in the Montagne de Reims area, famed for the most Pinot Noir plantings in the region. Quality is of the upmost importance, their well-aged vineyards, some over 30-years-old are planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, as well as a smaller percentage of Pinot Meunier. Adopting extreme viticulture methods, Francis Egly biodynamically grows his grapes and keeps their yields incredibly low, averaging around half of the regional sum – but the results are compelling, expressive and high-quality fruit. The vinification techniques are also very natural, extended on the lees aging is matched with the absence of both fining and filtration. This reference-point grower offers an array of remarkable wines, with notable transparency between sites, vintages and grape varietals. The vintage Grand Cru Millesime, along with the non-vintage Grand Crus, Brut Tradition, Brut Rosé, and Blanc de Noirs Vieilles Vignes, are excellent examples of the region’s most unmanipulated Champagnes.
