Monica Larner
Issue Date
30th Jun 2017
Source
231, The Wine Advocate
The 2013 Barolo Via Nuova is a more accessible wine with ripe and round fruit flavors that lift gracefully from the glass. The bouquet is immediately open and articulate. Fruit is sourced from six vineyards spread across three townships: Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d'Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d'Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). Each one, averaging only half a hectare in size, adds a little piece of the puzzle. In the future, the idea is to increase the percentage of Mosconi fruit to bring total bottle production from 4,000 to around 6,000. The wine is ample and generous in terms of its aromatic intensity with bold fruit, spice and balsam herb. The finish is dry and marked by distant mineral flavors.
Chiara Boschis describes the 2013 vintage as having a double personality. It started off cool and the the growth cycle got off to a slow start. The second half of the season saw a faster acceleration that quickly compensated for the delays. The Cannubi cru is south-facing and is usually among the first vintages to ripen. It suffers most in the hot years, but performs beautifully in more temperate vintages like 2013 (that also had more moisture in the soils). Chiara was joined by her younger brother Giorgio in the winery in 2010.
Producer
E. Pira & Figli - Chiara Boschis
Chiara Boschis is a true protagonist among the small, but driven group of women winemakers in the Langhe. Coming from a long lineage of viticulturists, she took the reins of E. Pira & Figli in 1990. Her parents purchased the estate in 1981 from an old wine producing family who had no heirs to take over the property. While she never wanted to change the winery’s name, she tastefully added her own. Her goal from the beginning has been to seamlessly unite the astonishing potential of Barolo, with approachable elegance, and bold, intense aromas. She achieves this goal, vintage after vintage, through rigorous vineyard management, meticulous selection, and impeccable vinification techniques such as shortened maceration, malolactic fermentation in stainless steel and aging in big oak barrels or barriques. In 2010, her brother, Giorgio joined her, and they now run this historical small wine cellar together. Today, the estate’s extremely limited production is crafted from eight and a half hectares of vineyards. Located only amongst the best hills of Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba and Barolo, the family still cultivates a small plot in the famed Cannubi vineyard. The resulting wines are some of the most refined and delicate wines in Italy. Their collection is envied by many.
