Amongst the best Ribera del Duero estates, Dominio de Atauta is a relatively new producer. Established in 1999 by Miguel Sanchez, a wine-merchant from Madrid, his intentions were to recover the great terroir of this historic wine-growing region. The revival of the property has continued with the Avante Selecta group since 2009. Within the walls of the Soria province, Atauta’s high-altitude vineyards push the traditional wine-growing limits, with a significant amount of the ungrafted vines. The Atauta valley itself is known for producing the most distinctive reds within the Ribera del Duero. The property consists of 15 hectares of their own vineyards, as well as an additional 30 hectares, that are managed and cultivated on sandy soils with limestone bedrock. The 45 hectares of vineyards are scattered over 500 pre-phyllozera Tempranillo plots, the vines average around 130-years-old. Today, Almudena Alberca acts as the sole vintner at this estate, she is also one of the few Spanish women who have achieved such prestige as a Master of Wine. While Ismael Sanz, rounds up this determined duo as the head of viticulture. The flagship, Dominio de Atauta, reflects the ever-present mineral characteristics of the Atauta Valley, crafted from biodynamically farmed Tempranillo grapes, the wine remains elegant without the leathery notes that so often are associated with Ribera del Duero wines.
