Concentrated and dense, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Julien Barrot delivers scents of black cherries, black olives, mocha and hints of dried spices. It's evolved quite a bit since I tasted it at the estate last year, becoming richer and more tannic than many other examples of the vintage. It shows surprising heft on the full-bodied palate and a long, velvety, chocolate-tinged finish.
Producer
Domaine La Barroche
A domaine that is receiving quite a bit of attention these days, Domaine la Barroche is a producer that has transformed itself. Dating back to the 17th century, Barroche was founded by Alexandre Barrot whose original vineyard purchases still account for the core of the domaine today. Even more amazing is that the Barrot family still owns the domaine today. Its current era began in 1972 when Christian Barrot, the current head of the family, added to their vineyard land. At that time, their fruit was sold off to négociants and bottled under the name of Lou Destré d'Antan. When his son, Julien, joined the domaine in 2003, people started to take notice as he completely dynamised their domaine. They currently own approximately 12.5 hectares of vines with one parcel located next to Château Rayas on sandy soil. From these vines, they produce multiple wines, including a cuvée they call Terroir, which is from young, mostly Grenache vines; Cuvée Fiancée which is 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah from vines that are 25-100+ old; and Pure, their most exclusive wine, produced from 100% Grenache planted in 1901 and from Châteauneuf's best sandy soils.
