Don't discount the 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée based on overall perceptions of the vintage; Laurence Feraud claims it reminds her of the 2014, which savvy consumers will know was one of the appellation's standouts that year. Violets and garrigue appear on the nose, joined by cherries and raspberries. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, silky and tannic, but the tannins are ripe and not overly prominent. It may need another year or two to soften but should then drink well for a decade or more.
Producer
Domaine du Pegau
The Féraud family has been cultivating vines, as well as olive and cherry trees since 1670. However, Domaine du Pégau was not established until 1987 by the visionary of the family, Laurence Féraud. Covering over 20-hectares of vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the vines are split amongst three large plots. Domaine du Pégau produces traditional Châteauneuf-du-Papes, and arguably the most impressive and age-worthy wines in the appellation. Their top blend, a vastly concentrated Cuvée da Capo, has become one of the most sought after wines in the Rhône Valley. Produced only in the best years, the grapes exclusively come from the oldest vines and finest parcels of the estate, the resulting wine is classic and firmly structured. Up until now, only five vintages have been produced: 1998, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2010, and all have received a perfect ranking of 100-points from Robert Parker. The Cuvée Réservée is in fact the regular bottling of their red, it is nonetheless a remarkable and riper style Châteauneuf-du-Pape, full of strong tannins in its youth.
