Domaine Clair-Daü
A Marsannay-based domaine that was created when Joseph Clair of Santenay returned home from World War I wounded to rest. He met and married Marguerite Daü of Marsannay and several years later, Clair-Daü was created. They had three children, the eldest being Bernard. He began helping his father in 1939, and over time they created a stellar reputation for some of the best Grand Crus and largest holdings from Gevrey-Chambertin, with a total vineyard area adding up to an incredible 38 hectares. When Joseph passed away in 1971, family disagreements escalated over the years and by 1985, the domaine had to be divided up into four different shares. Bernard retained two-thirds while another family member sold their share (a notable 17 hectares) to Louis Jadot. Bernard's part eventually fell into the hands of Bruno, the eldest of Bernard's 5 children. Bruno who began working with his father at the domaine in 1978, still owns more than half of the original Clair-Daü domaine which is now called Domaine Bruno Clair.
