78 % Merlot, 22 % Cabernet Franc. Fassprobe: 18/20 2023 – 2039

The 2014 La Conseillante has a well-defined bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, minerals, touches of seaweed and light incense aromas that develop fine intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. This Pomerol is very well poised with perfectly judged acidity. Whilst not a match for Titans like the 1989 or 2010, this La Conseillante possesses nuance and sophistication, a precision that does justice to the name. It should be earlier-drinking that other vintages that I have tasted, though given the terroir and track record, it would not surprise me if it gives 25 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted twice with consistent notes.<br/>

Charming and silky, this could stand in for a Chambolle-Musigny, with blood orange and damson plum coulis notes hitting a slightly higher pitch before turning to darker plum and black cherry flavors. Gorgeous floral and rooibos tea details fill in on the long, suave finish. A graceful version that will be hard to lay off, though capable of handling cellaring. Best from 2020 through 2035.—J.M

Château La Conseillante
Located on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Château La Conseillante is one of the most emblematic properties in Pomerol. With its roots tracing back to the 1700s, La Conseillante has been under the ownership of the Nicolas family for just about 150 years, and has uniquely remained unchanged ever since. Situated on the appellation’s boundary with Saint- Émilion, bordering those of L’Évangile and Cheval Blanc, the original 18 plots of vineyards stretch across 12-hectares in eastern Pomerol. Today, fifth generation Bertrand and Jean-Valmy as the joint managing directors, carry on to pursue higher levels of excellence. In 2007, they released the estate’s second wine, Duo de Conseillante. And by 2012 they renovated their winemaking facilities to allow for separate vinification of each vineyard holding. The Grand Vin, La Conseillante is a firmly structured Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend that is equally complex and rich of dark fruits and oriental spices. One of Pomerol’s greatest names, Château La Conseillante consistently produces five-star wines with a great sense of ancestral tradition.
