The 2016 Chasse-Spleen has a very elegant bouquet with neatly integrated oak, the terroir really showing through here, hints of cedar and smoke emerging with time. The palate is fresh as a button on the entry. It is cut through with a superb line of acidity that engenders superb tension, the tannins firm but fine with a subtle marine influence towards the persistent finish. This is a fabulous Chasse-Spleen, the best I have ever tasted from the estate. It could end up at the top of by banded score.

A restrained style, but with a tasty core of juicy plum and red currant fruit that melds with light mulling spice, black tea and sanguine notes. There's a dusting of cedar on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 12,500 cases made. — JM

Château Chasse Spleen
Château Chasse-Spleen is one of the leading estates in the Moulis appellation, along with Château Poujeaux and Château Maucaillou. Classified as a Cru Bougeois since 2006, Chasse-Spleen, however, more often than not outperforms Médoc’s most renowned classed growths. With a history tracing back to the 16th century, the château has been managed by women since 1976, when daughter of the Taillan Group’s founder Jacques Merlaut, Bernadette Villars took charge. Following her example, daughter Claire ran the estate from 1992 until the turn of the century, when sister, Céline assumed the role of Chief Executive. Today, the sizable property is managed by Céline and her husband, allowing her to ultimately follow both of her passions, wine and architecture. With over 104-hectares dedicated to vines, the château consistently turns out rich and concentrated, deeply-colored harmonious reds. Including their top wine, Chasse-Spleen, and their equally impressive Haut-Médoc Cuvée, L’Heritage de Chasse-Spleen.
