Ch. de Pommard

Reputed to be the single largest holding in Burgundy (with 26 hectares), Château de Pommard is also one of the most majestic. It was originally ordered to be built in 1726 by Vivant Micault, a cavalryman, Parisian lawyer and Secretary to King Louis XV (amongst others). He had asked for a Regency style dwelling, surrounded by farming and winemaking facilities that could welcome the Grands Vins of Château de Pommard with dignity. Vivant Micault descended from one of the oldest families of Pommard, and his ancestors had distinguished themselves several times over in Burgundy and throughout the Kingdom. From 1763-1936, it was owned by the Marey-Monge family, an important family who helped secure Pommard's reputation as one of the finest red wines in France by travelling the world and pouring their wines. They even owned the entirety of Romanée St Vivant following the Revolution. Over the years, the Château changed hands multiple times and its wines did not carry the same repute as its earlier days. But in 2003, it was purchased by Maurice Giraud, an entrepreneurial real estate developer and businessman from Savoie who immediately installed Philippe Charlopin and then Emmanuel Sala as winemaker. He has kept the Château and its property intact. He also installed a négociant side business, so in addition to Pommard, he produces several other wines from the Côte de Beaune as well as a village Gevrey-Chambertin.
