Composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 80% new, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Pichon-Longueville Baron slips sensuously out of the glass with provocative cherry preserves, baked raspberries and fresh blackcurrants scents, leading to nuances of red roses, charcoal, tilled soil and cardamom plus a waft of forest floor. Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
A Second Growth marked by its Cabernet-dominated full-bodied reds, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is one of Bordeaux’s most famed Super Seconds. Founded in the late 17th century, the château was built in 1851 and boasts a breathtaking view of the Gironde Estuary. The fine-wine branch of the AXA insurance company, AXA Millésimes acquired the property in 1987 bringing in owner of Château Lynch-Bages, Jean-Michel Cazes shortly after to run the estate. Together with major renovations of the estate and the Cazes’ management, excellence was soon restored. Retiring in 2000, Christian Seely assumed Cazes’ important role as managing director. Today, their signature muscular wines are a culmination of years of precision and craftsmanship, from vineyard to cellar. Pichon-Longueville Baron is the rich and layered Grand Vin, this five-star wine gains in depth with at least 10 years of cellaring. The second wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville was introduced in 1986 and similarly conveys the château’s classic powerful, but elegant style.
