The 2007 Lafleur has a straightforward bouquet with mulberry and strawberry pastilles, touches of scorched earth and game coming through courtesy of the Cabernet Franc. I admire the definition and poise on display here. The palate is medium-bodied with quite bold tannin and satisfying ripeness considering the growing season, a mixture of red and black fruit laced with black pepper, truffle and clove, that lead towards a solid, firm finish. Though this is an off vintage, this showing suggests it will benefit from another couple of years in bottle. Tasted at the Christies’ Lafleur masterclass in London.

Perfumed, fruity and aromatic, with licorice and berry on the nose. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and a spicy, almost raisiny character on the palate. Long and very soft and silky, with a lovely core. A little austere, but with wonderful concentration for the vintage. Racy and sweet. Best after 2013. 1,000 cases made. — JS

Delicious aromas and flavors of kirsch and licorice emerge from the dark ruby-hued 2007 Lafleur (a blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc). It is a medium-bodied, round, luscious cuvee revealing more density than most of its peers. Drink it over the next 10-15 years
Producer
Château Lafleur
Consisting of a mere 4.5-hectares of vines, with more than half, surprisingly planted to Cabernet Franc, Château Lafleur may be one of the smaller Pomerol properties, but that does not change that is certainly one of the finest. Located on the gravel-rich Pomerol Plateau, neighboring the phenomenal châteaux, Pétrus and La Fleur-Pétrus, Lafleur regularly produces comparable high-quality wines. Since its creation in 1872, Château Lafleur has stayed in the same kin-line, today, the fifth generation is represented by the Guinaudeau family, that took over estate in the mid-1980s. This single-vineyard grower-producer, due to its rather large proportion of Cabernet Franc, creates considerably structured wines that have the ability to age gracefully for two decades or more. Lafleur is their consistently impressive Grand Vin that shows the house’s signature concentrated layers of dark fruits, minerals, and liquorice, complimented by the wines overall rich opulence.
