The 2016 La Tour Figeac displays plenty of fruit on the nose: mulberry, a touch of game and even a subtle hint of garrigues! It felt a little incongruous at first but I actually grew to like it more and more as it opened. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly "furry" tannin on the entry. There is good weight in the mouth, structured with a touch of bitter cherry towards the finish, although I appreciate the tension towards the finish, the edginess that comes through. It just needs more finesse and detail to merit a higher evaluation.

This has a solid core of plum and blackberry fruit carried by lightly dusty cedar, vanilla and loam notes. Just a touch austere through the finish.—J.M

Château La Tour Figeac
Located on the border with Pomerol on the famous graves terroir of Saint-Émilion, Château La Tour Figeac was separated from the Château-Figeac property in 1879. Included in the original Saint-Émilion Classification of 1955, La Tour Figeac was ranked amongst the Grands Crus Classés, the estate now consists of 15 hectares of vineyards. Planted to more than half of Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, the vines are farmed biodynamically. Today, the property is owned and managed by the Rettenmaier family, with Otto Rettenmaier at helm. The La Tour Figeac includes wine experts, Christine and Stéphane Derenoncourt, who help to craft tasteful yet pleasantly spicy wines year after year.
