Also diesmal wieder zurück zu Klassik findend.

This property, which has been on a qualitative tear over the last generation, has produced one of the most successful wines of 2011. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it is broad, rich, medium to full-bodied and dense. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as lots of concentration, silky tannins, and a bigger, richer mouthfeel than any of its St.-Julien peers. The result is one of the stars of the vintage.

Shows a warm charcoal note from the start, backed by melted fig, crushed blackberry and steeped black currant fruit. A strong graphite edge pins down the finish. Dark in profile, but defined and well-suited to mid-term cellaring. A very solid effort. Best from 2016 through 2026. –JM

The 2011 Léoville Poyferré has a ripe bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, graphite and pressed flower scents. Quite open and more fruit-driven than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, quite fine tannins and satisfying weight. Touches of black pepper and cedar line the finish, though here, it just misses a bit of tension and Poyferré's trademark amplitude. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré
A longstanding Saint-Julien producer, Château Léoville Poyferré now ranks amongst the three great Léoville Super Seconds. Relatively small in size, this estate crafts massively weighted Left Bank wines that in the past decades have made several steps forward in quality. The maison has remained under the Cuvelier family’s ownership since 1921, however the property did not see major changes prior to the arrival of Didier Cuvelier in the 1970s. Didier hired the renowned vigneron, Michel Rolland and together they shaped Poyferré into a wonderful winery, one that easily rivals Bordeaux’s best. Along the Gironde Estuary, the château is sandwiched between the Margaux and Pauillac appellations planted amongst the gravelly sand and clay soils. Today, the 80-hectare vineyard and newly renovated vinification facilities represent the perfect balance between heritage and modernity. Poyferré is a prime expression of its terroir, a solid and impressively structured wine, this Grand Vin is pleasantly approachable compared to other Left Bank reds. The second wine, Moulin Riche is similar in quality for its value.
