Broad and extracted in feel, this pushes dark fig, black currant and bitter plum paste flavors to the fore, along with notes of espresso crema, alder and vanilla. Stays rich yet focused through the finish, leaving a lightly toothy echo at the end. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2037. 10,800 cases made. — JM
Producer
Château Faugères
The Grand Cru Classé estate, Château Faugères is now producing exemplary nouvelle vague Saint-Émilion wines. While the property has a long history, dating back to the early 19th century, the estate remained somewhat unknown until the turn of the century. With the advice of Stéphan von Neipperg, Silvio Denz a perfume designer and wine-enthusiast bought the château from a direct descendant of the founding family, Gorinne Guisez in 2005. Due to a culmination of Denz’s leadership and major investments that were made in both the vineyard and cellars, the wines have been increasingly impressive. Michel Rolland acts as consulting enologist, producing wines that reflect the very unique aspects of their 37-hectare terroir. Ranking amongst the very best, the château crafts a super-rich cuvée called Péby Faugères only in the finest years, along with their dense Grand Vin Faugères, a second wine labeled Haut Faugères, and a forward Côtes de Castillon production, Cap de Faugères.
